I recently read this post by one of my absolute favorite bloggers, Mama Natural, and thought to myself – wow, my routine used to be very similar… right up until I had Zoe. Now, I’m lucky if I get a shower, which I do manage to squeeze in most days, thank you very much. But lately, it’s all too common to be so tired at night that I skip my former normal routine.
BZ (before Zoe), my bedtime routine was the only thing I’ve ever been that strict about. I can probably count the nights on one hand that I went to bed without washing my face and brushing my teeth. I’ve been taking care of my skin since I was a preteen – back when my parents used to sell Nu Skin. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize. I also did special weekly treatments. Now, I can’t tell you the last time I put on a face mask…
Our evenings look like this
Most nights, Zoe gets a bath. She loves the water, and it’s a great way to let her know that it’s almost time for bed. Zubair does bath time on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. I get the rest. We split it up so neither of us have too many days in a row, and so Mommy can get a break during the week.
After bath, if she’s really tired – she goes straight to bed. I lay down with her; nurse her; and sing til she falls asleep. Sometimes Zubair comes in to rescue me if she’s taking a while to fall asleep. Many nights it’s easier for her play for a while until she gets really sleepy. We’re fortunate that she’s not a cranky baby, and is happy to play until she passes out. It could be anywhere between 8 pm to 10 pm. Depends on the day and if she took one or two naps.
When Zoe is tucked in, Zubair and I get a few hours to ourselves to talk or watch a movie. We also use the time to catch up on any work we need to finish. The one benefit of a small apartment is that our office is also the living room. We are always in the same room; it’s nice and cozy.
Before I go to sleep
Especially if I forgot to brush my teeth in the morning, I always remember at night because I can’t sleep with a dirty mouth. I used to be neurotic about taking care of my teeth – some of that still lingers; although, I’m not the champion flosser I once was. I love my Sonicare – but choose a regular toothbrush if I’m too tired to brush for the recommended two minutes.
Since I don’t really wear make-up that often anymore, I don’t always wash my face at night. Unless I take a shower, I usually just splash with water. Thankfully, my skin has cleared up, so I don’t have to be as diligent about my skincare. My new favorite cleanser is Weleda Gentle Cleansing Milk. Gone are the days of stripping my face of the natural oils to rid myself of acne with those drying cleansers and treatments. I also adore my Clarisonic Mia, which I might use at night – again, if I have the gumption. My go-to lip balm is Rosebud Lip Salve. It is the best. I keep one in every room so I always have it available.
I brush my hair 100 times (totally kidding); say goodnight to Zubair; and hop into bed to snuggle with my sleeping babe. Even though Zubair wakes up two hours before me, I usually go to bed before him. He’s such a night owl. Many nights we go to bed at the same time. This is a pleasant change for me. Before we moved, he stayed up working until about 3 am every night.
We have a great groove going on. It’s a simple rhythm, rather than a strict schedule. It’s perfect for each of our personalities – we all seem to like to go with the flow. Though I must admit, our routine is comfortable and I miss it when we’re out of sync.
